  Playstation Sales
Posted by: AdminGG - 20-11-2014, 09:02 AM - Forum: Games on Sale - Replies (12)

I am always seeing good deals, so I thought I would make a thread about it.

Currently there is 3 big sales on, all prices are valid until the end of the month:

From the Anime sale, I would recommend any Final Fantasy game. Especially since FF 1 - 9 is on sale for less than $10 and less than $8 if you are PS+.

From the double discount sale, Counter Spy is like $10 and meant to be very good. Also you get three copies due to cross buy with PS4/3/Vita.

From the games under $39 sale, Dragons Crown is a must and is only $26 for the Vita version and like $24 for the PS3 version. Killzone Mercenary for Vita has also been added to this sale and is $20. Dam steal!

Feel free to post any discounts of sales here you find on the store.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth - MEGA THREAD
Posted by: Jargonion - 15-11-2014, 03:28 PM - Forum: Video Game Discussion - Replies (28)

By the constant demands from a minority group too lazy to make their own thread, I present to you:

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth - a mega thread!

This is the forum's official thread to discuss all things Rebirth.

Not sure about Rebirth? Terrible at playing it? Are you a shit head who was hyped for Rebirth despite only playing a few minutes of the original? THIS IS THE THREAD FOR YOU.

Post any and all comments or questions you have here, and with any luck, they'll be answered.

Got tips? Post them!

Got synergies? Post them!

Here's a terrible video to kick everything off! I'm extremely sorry for the shitty quality, I promise the future videos will look much, much cleaner.

  Freedom Wars
Posted by: AdminGG - 09-11-2014, 02:00 PM - Forum: Video Game Discussion - Replies (14)

So probably the biggest title for Vita this year came out last week. It's called Freedom Wars and is really fun.

Anyone else here have it or plan to get it?

Basically you are a prisoner or 'sinner' born with a one million year prison sentence. The world is running outta resources, so every useless person born who adds to the over population is slammed with a one million year sentence to server their Panopticon (which is like a safe haven within your country that's operated like its Big Brother).

So the game plays similar to Monster Hunter, Soul Sacrifice, God Eater etc. in that you fight giant monsters (in this case called Abductors) with a variety of weapons from swords to guns. You also have a thorn wrapped around your arm which adds a similar mechanic like Just Cause 2.

However it's much more than just killing giant monsters, there are loads of different game types and things to do.

Right now New Zealand is coming 39th out of however many countries around the world (Japan excluded for now).

It's pretty good considering there have only been like 130 sign up for the NZ Panopticon. 130 is probably the total number of Vita owners in NZ too.

Graphics are nice too, and im loving the weapons:

The fun thing about fight abductors is you can cut off their limbs:

You can dock their arms, legs, hands, and any weapons like missile pods they might have attached to their body.

You spend alot of time in your jail cell where you can craft weapons and take on all your missions:

All in all, this is fast becoming my favorite game. Any chance we have any players here?

  Grand Strategy
Posted by: Marlek - 07-11-2014, 12:07 PM - Forum: Video Game Discussion - Replies (5)

Ever wondered what Civ V on steroids would feel like?

Well here we go! The largest grand strategy game from Paradox is the right one for you! Rated 95 by both Destructoid (http://www.destructoid.com/review-europa...9939.phtml) and Gamewatcher (http://www.gamewatcher.com/reviews/europ...eview/8889) it is the grand strategy that you evolve from Civ V, further in depth in maintaining your city state/nation/empire than many other strategy games out there! The reviews do a better job than I in detailing the game and I myself have poured 700+ hours into this creatively designed, beautiful game.

I am here to both show you the wonder and teach you the brilliance of this game and so shall freely educate you all in the ways of Europa Universalis 4.

Here is a tutorial by a grand strategy game enthusiast like myself on this game, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfBf4qagUv4, but if that is not enough I will be streaming a noob friendly starter this weekend if you have any more questions.

If you think you have mastered Civ V or Total War and want a challenge again then dive straight into this! http://www.twitch.tv/rampant_ai

P.S. the multiplayer is insane if you can get 6+ people vying for the world!

  Dungeons and Dragons
Posted by: Pythagean - 29-10-2014, 01:11 PM - Forum: Everything Else - Replies (8)

So I ran my first Dungeons and Dragons session in the weekend for a few users from the forum (Grey Ghost, Jadmoroth, Altoth and my brother).

All in all I think it went quite well, total playtime was about 4-5 hours which includes about 1/2 - 2 hours for character creation. I am using a pretty standard campaign Keep on the Shadowfell with a few minor tweaks.

We only actually fought one battle with a band of Kobolds, the rest of the time was spent wandering around town harassing citizens and guards (I'm looking at you Grey Ghost). But in the end they found one of the quests, and they are on their way out of the town to clear out a Kobold lair.

I've got notes on a couple of things to do better next time, but I'm pretty sure everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Has anyone else played before? It was a first time for everyone involved in this game.

  Are you a Prison Architect?
Posted by: Jargonion - 27-10-2014, 05:21 PM - Forum: Video Game Discussion - Replies (12)

Howdy there, warden!

Ever wanted to build and manage your own prison? Not willing to shell out $30 for an alpha? FEAR NOT. In this thread, I intend to give you the opportunity to design your own prison, and have me construct it for you. Not only will I do this, but I'll also put your design to the test, letting it run autonomously, documenting its success and failure until the prison ultimately either fails, or stays stable.

At the bottom of this post, you'll find a shitty template for half the detail's you'll need to submit to get your prison made. Just download that template, make a shitty sketch of the prison you want (it doesn't have to look good, I just need to know where the rooms are/what they are), and fill in a couple of boxes. I'll need to know how many of each staff type and how many prisoners you want in your prison (prisoner numbers are a bit hard to control, so I just need an approximation). There are also some options to look at, such as the authorization of lethal force, or whether or not you want fog of war on (anything a guard can't see, either in person or through CCTV (which you'll have to place in your design) will be invisible to you).

You template only really needs to be as detailed as telling me exactly what each room is. I'll make sure everything meets the minimum requirements to be valid - if you want anything extra in them, let me know.

The second half of the submission is your regime. You have 24 hours in a day, and each one is planned out for the prisoners. In the post where you submit your template, spell out your basic regime so I know how to run the joint. For example -

12am-6am: Sleep
6am-7am: Shower
7am-9am: Eat
9am-11am: Free Time
1pm-3pm: Work
3pm-5pm: Lockup
5pm-7pm: Eat
8pm-10pm: Yard
10pm-12am: Sleep

The final thing you need to let me know is if you want the prison to be run from start to finish, or if you'd like feedback if I notice anything's about to go horribly wrong. The feedback option means the game will be paused until I submit a report to you. Once you have my feedback, you can chose to change things, or let the prison continue to run its course.

A couple of things to note:

  • You'll have a really rather large budget. If, somehow, I can't build everything right from scratch, I'll let you know.
  • I'll take care of all administrative things for you, so consider all unlocks (such as tazers and bank loans) at your disposal.
  • I'll also take care of the bank's grants for you, to get some extra income (as long as it fits with the template you've given me)
  • I'll wire the place and set all the plumbing down for you. Don't worry about putting it in your design.
  • If you're taking this seriously, you might want to make a small list of items you want in each room as part of your post. For example "I'd like weight benches, pool tables, phones, televisions, and CCTV cameras in my yard"
  • I imagine you're not all used to this game, so before I construct the prison, I'll send a short list of recommendations to you (basically asking if you want items that you might not have known about)
  • You'll also be able to set your own rules. You can set punishments for the breaking of different rules. For the most part, this is comprised of being locked up/in solitary for X hours, or searching the prisoner or his cell.

  • If you want your prison to have administrative tools at its disposal, I suggest you have a few offices. 4 should be enough.
  • If you want a robust security system, I'd suggest also having a security room, and armoury, and a kennel somewhere
  • DON'T FORGET TO ENCLOSE YOUR PRISON - At the very least, use a fence.
  • To have a functional prison, at the very least I'd suggest having cells, a kitchen, a canteen, and a shower
  • Put phones in places, especially if you're not going to build a visitation centre.

TAKE THIS - You'll need it

This is important, so I've put it in it's own post:

If you ask for buildings or items or regime activities that don't exist, I'll figure out the closest approximation for you. You're submitting plans to a human who can interpret (or at worst, ask questions).

I'll translate what you want into the game, so you can see if you can make and maintain a prison. Just design whatever you want.

  Jargonion's Prison of Love
Posted by: Jargonion - 25-10-2014, 06:41 PM - Forum: Video Game Discussion - Replies (7)

A few months ago, I made a shitty prison in prison architect. Later, I sold that prison for money and started over. I built a second shitty prison, and then sold it. The result of this waste of time was $480k in starting cash for my next prison, quite a bit more than the default starting of $50k. Months passed until today when, in a fit of boredom, I decided to spend all my cash on making the most comfortable and stable prison I could.

This is my story.

[Boring disclaimer - In the interests of speed, I turned forests off. I also turned the fog of war off, though I now regret it].

Because there's no material in screenshotting the slow process of actually planning and building my prison I've started off with the (almost) finalised prison layout. All up, a very rough estimate puts the cost of building this prison at ~$750k.

Here is the overview of the prison

Here are the offices/armoury/kennel/medbay/morgue/solitary confinement.

The workshops and laundry...with a room I have no use for.

The current utilities layout for anyone interested. Instead of starting with a single generator and waiting for it to overload, forcing me to deal with a tangled mess of short-circuits when trying to install a second, I decided to install and utilize two generators/pumps at once.

My current patrol routes/locations.

I've yet to realise I've forgotten to hire cooks.

Bill Li. I like him, and he doesn't seem like trouble. I've picked a favourite. I've downgraded him to min-security to better track him around the prison.

Fresh prisoners are always volatile. They usually are in dire need of sleep (a big issue, since they arrive just as sleep-time ends), and want freedom. I'll break them soon enough.

Fucking Cummings. He gets so tired and cranky that he breaks his bed and starts a 1-man riot.

I've forgotten to train my guards to use tazers (I was actually so rich I unlocked all the bureaucratic stuff before taking my first load of prisoners), so my guy takes a beating before knocking Cummings out. As per my policy, his cell and person gets searched.

Before getting his broken, bleeding body dragged to solitary.

My current regime.

After spending a few hours in a coma, Cumming wakes up to his temporary home.

And is brought back to a new cell (no idea why) just in time for sleep.

I miss Bill Li.

I love you, Bill Li.

Looking to play Borderlands 3 / Payday 2
Posted by: Jargonion - 22-10-2014, 09:29 AM - Forum: Multiplayer Meet Up - Replies (6)

If you have Borderlands 3 (Called the "pre-sequel" because Gearbox are a bunch of buzz-word hungry fuckheads) or Payday 2, I'd be very interested in playing with you.

I'm always interested in having people to play with so, if you're interested or free, let me know so we can bang some missions out together.

  Playstation Vita Thread
Posted by: Pythagean - 21-10-2014, 08:39 AM - Forum: Video Game Discussion - Replies (1)

So after months of relentless pestering from Grey Ghost, I finally bought a Playstation Vita.

Does anyone else on here have one? What do you think of it?

The only downside is I bought it off Trade Me, and the girl I bought it off is painfully slow at emailing back. Which means I won't be getting it before the long weekend

  Steam Free Weekends
Posted by: Selegraphon - 17-10-2014, 11:14 PM - Forum: Games on Sale - No Replies

Often, Steam will have free weekends where you can download, install and play games for a limited amount of time (usually until Monday morning, although this ends up being a bit later for us located in New Zealand). Even better, these games are usually on sale as well during and after the free period.

It's a fantastic way to test out games you're considering buying, or for finding games that you wouldn't normally consider.

This week, Based Gaben has given us a bumper crop of games to try on!

Awesomenauts 75% off $2.49
Blade Symphony 75% off $3.74
Company of Heroes 2 75% off $12.49
Don't Starve 66% off $5.09
Grid 2 75% off $7.49
Injustice 50% off $9.99
Killing Floor 75% off $4.99
Payday 2 75% off $7.49
Trine 2 80% off $4.99
XCOM: Enemy Unknown 75% off $10.00

Now, I can personally vouch for XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It is an absolute gem of a game, and I would say one of the best games from 2012 (as well as Fez and The Walking Dead). However, something to note if you do decide to buy it, it's actually cheaper to buy the XCOM: Enemy Unknown + The Bureau: XCOM Declassified bundle. For some reason, the bundle is 83% off, making it only $8.49. So it saves you some cash, and gets you a free, albeit apparently rather average, game.

As for Don't Starve, it's a game that Grey Ghost is fanatical about. He's written a part guide/part novella based on his experiences of it. So if an unforgiving indie action-adventure games with survival and rogue-like elements sounds like your kind of thing, read the thread and try it out!
