Crescent Bay - New Oculus Rift Prototype
Posted by: Pythagean - 26-09-2014, 01:42 PM - Forum: Everything Else - Replies (2)

This is for those of you who don't actively follow the development of the Oculus Rift.

A few days ago at Oculus Connect (conference centered around virtual reality), Oculus unveiled their new prototype for the Rift, called Crescent Bay. This new model has a number of improvements over the second development kit (DK2) including:

  • Improved Resolution
  • Lower Weight
  • Built in Audio
  • Better Motion Tracking (Up to 360 degrees)

Accounts from people who have tried the Crescent Bay have been overwhelmingly positive, it looks like this is another big step for VR. Below is a link to a review:
Link

Note that this prototype will not be available for purchase, although 4-5 months after Oculus unveiled their last prototype (Crystal Cove) they released the DK2. So it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for either a DK3 or Consumer Version to be announced during next year. Fingers crossed!

I can't contain my excitement for this game. You can almost literally do anything, the gameplay is so diverse. And now you can take a wolf into battle?

I am so ready.

Game of the year, every year, for the rest of my life.

  Admin GG's Don't Starve Adventure
Posted by: AdminGG - 10-09-2014, 10:09 PM - Forum: Video Game Discussion - Replies (15)

Welcome to my Don't Starve thread!

What is Don't Starve you say? Don't Starve is an action-adventure video game with survival and roguelike elements, developed and published by the indie company Klei Entertainment.

Klei is easily one of my favorite indie studios and are responsible for the Shank series and Mark of the Ninja. These guys genre-hop like bosses.

It's out of PC, MAC, Linux, PS4 and PS Vita.

I played this game loads on Steam (40-60 hours) but dropped off not long before they released the Reign of Giants DLC which has a butt-load more content I know jack all about.

It came out very recently on PS Vita along with the DLC and I thought I'd hop back into it again. I shall be documenting my adventures here.

Show ContentAdmin GGs first week survival tutorial:

Just a note because I didn't make it clear before:
I am playing vanilla Don't Starve. Reign of the Giants dlc is not active.

Day 1:

I picked Wilson as my character (the only character you have to start with) as he's still my favorite, although I am yet to play some of the new characters.

So I started off quite well. There was a Savanna biome not far away from where I spawned and there were Beefalo there:

Beefalo are passive mobs that are like a cross between wooly Yaks and Elk I suppose. Except giant. This is a great find for day 1 and they poop everywhere which you can pickup and use for manure for farms and before Winter arrives (which is a kill point or all new players for sure) you can shave these wooly fools and make some nice warm clothes.

Your first night in Don't Starve is always very lonely. Nothing to do but stand by the fire:

Most new players die on the first night, because if you do not make a fire at night you will die.

Day 5:

Skipping to day 5 now as I am just going to make screenshots to document my progress and not comment on every day (each day is like 5mins anyway).

While I was plundering graves, there is a small chance of  ghost spawning instead of grave loot. Wilson is a man of science also:

Tee hee.

Day 7:

Looting those graves and making my main base by those Beefalo sure paid off!

I am incredibly well set up for 1 week in. I got lucky and got 2 gears from looting graves. Gears can be used to make Ice Boxes which you can store food it and it makes the food last twice as long before it spoils. Fantastic for winter! And the chances of getting 2 gears so I could make 2 Ice Boxes was just the best luck.

Also living by the Beefalo means I can use their poops to make and fertilize farms. I also have a Crock Pot which is used for making sweet food.

The two contraptions on the left are science machines you need to build in order to unlock the next tier of craftable items and equipment. Currently I have built up to an Alchemy Engine so I have a vast majority of stuff available to make already.

Bloody good first week!

I am going to stop there for now. Currently I have made it through my first winter, but this is a good introduction for now. Will post more soon!

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
Posted by: Kesh on Hend - 07-09-2014, 08:03 PM - Forum: Music, Movies, and TV Shows - Replies (2)

I liked it. Sure it wasn't nearly as good as the first one, but it was still very enjoyable and still had artistic merit. All the good shots are still there and it's every bit as obsessively faithful. 9 years was just too long for more Sin City.

The stories adapted from the Comic were exceptionally done, although held back by a few performances. Just Another Saturday Night was a nice intro to the opening credits and Mickey Rourke is still as perfect as ever for Marv, but a few of the recast roles in A Dame to Kill For felt wrong. Though there is a story reason behind Dwight's new face, Josh Brolin just isn't as right for the role as Clive Owen and I see this as a definite miss. Eva Green was perfect as Ava Lord, exactly how she is in the comic. The new Minute was trying too hard to be Michael Clarke Duncan but he actually did a great job of it.

Of the new stories, The Long Bad Night was easily the best. It could have been apart of the first film and no one would have picked it out as an oddity. Joseph Gordon-Levitt did an excellent job. However, Nancy's Last Dance is where it all goes wrong. It was self referential, cheesy and preachy in the way you'd think the fifth Seasons of The Wire and Breaking Bad are preachy. I like to think that the (current) showrunners for The Walking Dead have a lot of maturity and self control, but Nancy's Last Dance shows that Robert Rodriguez lacks in both. The story is written like a bad fan fiction, it even uses flashbacks from the story it's a sequel to.

Show ContentSpoiler:

The short story used in the first film was both better in content and execution. Using it as both the intro and the conclusion was fantastic. Unfortunately this couldn't be matched in the sequel and if Robert Rodriguez can do it anything right it's a finale, but Nancy's Last Dance felt too much like a full stop and less like Josh Hartnett's concluding "turn the right corner in Sin City... and you can find anything."

While it's in no way as good as the first film it still holds up as a sequel and in it's own right. I'd check it out if you've got money and time.

I'll start us off with this. Their description of Tim Sherwood was spot-on.
