  Star Wars Fan (short)Films
Posted by: crispier taco - 17-07-2017, 05:59 PM - Forum: Music, Movies, and TV Shows - Replies (1)

So, on this site I saw this neat Star Wars fan-made short film, inspired by some dark-side lore. Specifically, the line from The Book of Sith:

Sorzus Syn Wrote:Training is complete only with the death of the Master of the Apprentice

The creators of the film take pains not to step on any toes and explicitly state they don't even dream of interacting with canon, but this film is some pretty sweet shit. Production quality, the clean presentation of a premise, the acting. Check it out:

I assumed (somehow) that this was a one-of-a-kind production, but there are actually a fair few Star Wars fan films on youtube.
Here's a retelling of a Macbeth scene in the Star Wars universe:

Wanna see young Darth Maul battle it out with a Jedi Bain?

Most of these videos are 5-20 minutes, and because they already exist in a world with well established lore and characters, each video is mostly just cool light saber fights. So aside of the new triology, there's a load of (non-canon of course) other great Star Wars film content out there!

  Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2
Posted by: NZs no.3 - 13-07-2017, 11:03 AM - Forum: Video Game Discussion - Replies (12)

So theres a new DBZ fighting game coming out called Dragon Ball FighterZ made by Arc System Works that looks like it's gonna be amazing.

Arc System Works are also known for the Guilty Gear series of fighting games, and their latest game Xrd rev 2 is running on the same engine the new DBZ game will be using. So I thought to myself I'd grab the game since it was quite cheap and try get used to the game engine so I would have a good feel for the new DBZ game by the time it's out.

I didn't expect to love this game so much......

It's 100% anime characters: the fighting game. It's way over the top, way crazy, everyone has exaggerated disproportionate bodies, and the story is batshit insane. But man do I love it. Really fun and satisfying fighting game. Goddam beautiful to look at too! It's all in unreal 4 engine with full 3D models, but the way its been styled it looks like a 2D anime.

I've been getting ████ over once per week for Tekken 7 nights, but the last 2 weeks has just been Guilty Gear. Usually ████ is a hard sell on a new fighting game, but he's been enjoying it just as much. Check out basically all of lasts nights fights below, complete with terrible commentary and yelling while we are playing:

  Request for new subforum
Posted by: crispier taco - 12-07-2017, 07:18 PM - Forum: TVGF Discussion - Replies (7)

There is a need for a subforum dedicated to reverse polls, that is: polls but in the reverse. We also need to establish the necessary forum infrastructure to post reverse polls
[Image: 8oPEyqt.png]
Additionally, a subforum to put current and future nz politics in would be nice

  NEW ZEALAND QUESTION TIME
Posted by: crispier taco - 10-07-2017, 06:09 PM - Forum: Unrealpolitik - Replies (5)

I've been listening to Question Time as podcasts fairly regularly for the last couple of months.

Question Time happens twice a week, and 12 questions are submitted ahead of time. Members of Parliament (typically the opposition) ask questions of the government, and is a way for the government to be held to account on their activity. It is ostensibly performed with dignity and ceremony but it's often a hot mess of shit-talking, interjections and the speaker of the house playing Schoolteacher to bratty politicians. This does however make listening to it a bit more interesting, and helps laypeople gauge how controversial a statement is. I really appreciate that our MP's aren't above calling bullshit.

Question Time is basically my only perspective on NZ politics, politicians. I understand that this is a caveat, but fuck all of you all. This thread is for Question Time time.

  Kanji in English
Posted by: ████ - 25-08-2016, 12:26 AM - Forum: Everything Else - No Replies

Kanji are a type of "logogram" used in the Japanese writing system. Logogram= a symbol representing a word in a language, as opposed to a pictogram=a drawing that resembles an object, and an ideogram=a symbol that represents a concept. Sometimes a kanji is made up of 'radicals' which are smaller symbols. Often one can guess the meaning of a word by looking at the kanji, or the meaning of a kanji by looking at the radicals (although more often than not the reason for choosing those radicals was an obscure hundreds-year-old story).
Beginner Japanese learners are often amazed at this system to begin with "Pictures instead of words woohoo!" , and very soon after lose hope. Each kanji has multiple ways of saying it, at least a "Japanese" reading and a "Chinese" reading and sometimes an extra reading to make a specific word.
http://jisho.org/search/姦%20%23kanji
[Image: u59e6-g.50px.png]
This kanji is used in the words for "rape", "wicked", "necrophilia","adultery", etc.
Looking at the jisho link we can easily see the readings as : KAN, KEN, kan, kashima, wa, midara. 6 possible readings for one kanji...

"KAN"                       as it's chinese reading
"KEN"                       another chinese reading just because it sounds better in certain words
"KAN"                       a japanese reading
"KASHIMA"               a japanese reading, part of the word kashimashii, meaning: noisy, boisterous
"WA"                        in "MAWAsu" , joining two kanji together for meaning and then making up a unique reading
"MIDARA"                 this isn't even used anymore, but it has the same meaning as "bawdy, improper, dirty"

A similar (obviously not as complex) case happens in English with the few symbols we do use.

8                   the standard meaning when the symbol is by itself, said "eight"
8th                here the 8 is read "ei"
80                 here the 8 is read "ei"
800               here the 8 is read "eight"
8ve               musicians use this shorthand for octave. read "oct" (from latin).

so if we include my octave example, we have the readings as "eight" "ei" "oct".

If we were to use symbols more in our written language, we could have a symbol for "legs". That symbol would be read "leg" by itself, but next to the "8" the meanings suddenly come together to make a word we know, octopus. Nicely, this system can be used to link together meanings - the symbol for "leg" could be used in "to kick", "football" etc. Not so nicely, there is now a much more annoying divide between what is written and how to say it. Similar to the Chinese/Japanese readings problem, combining the symbol "eight" and "month" would be read as "August" instead of perhaps "octber", because we already used a different language for that word.

change the number of forums to about 2 or 3 max. then there's slightly less than one per user, leading to a fun metagame similar to musical chairs where each member must assert shitpost dominance in the forum of their choice.

  the Gospel According to Mark
Posted by: crispier taco - 20-08-2016, 11:23 AM - Forum: Everything Else - Replies (2)

Disclaimer: Not a Christian, nor doing this to tease Christians. Virtually all research done through wikipedia

Just for my own interest, I'm going to read a book out of the bible. We're going to use the King James Version, and stop at Mark 16:8, because apparently the bible archaeologists reckon the remainder of Mark 16 was written by later theologians.

According to the two-source hypothesis, Mark and a lost "Q source" were sourced for the writing of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, with Mark being the most consistent among them. Apparently John is a whole other deal.

[Image: 600px-Synoptic_problem%2C_two-source_hypothesis.svg.png]

Mark was written in Greek, for Greek-speaking Christians. Before the written culture of the bible, Christians would have spread their religion orally, and I imagine the understanding of Jesus matured differently in each community.

Chime in if you're interested, or if you have Christian knowledge to share.
