Blowing the Dust off my Vita Games
Posted by: jmp246 - 28-04-2016, 10:18 PM - Forum: Video Game Discussion - Replies (15)

The PS Vita was released in 2012. So the games must be "Classics" by Xbox standards.
The obvious game to start with is Killzone: Mercenary. A good shooter on a portable.

Admin GG's Retro Hardware and Game Pickups Collection Thread

Welcome to my Retro pickups thread! As you all know (because im sure I've told everyone I've ever been in contact with) I built a sweet ass arcade machine recently:
http://thevideogameforum.com/showthread.php?tid=390

Now this arcade can emulate everything from early Atari to PS1, Sega Dreamcast (even PSP now) and everything in-between. I mainly use the arcade for actual arcade games, however I've been diving loads into all the awesome consoles of the old days since I have access to entire game libraries at my fingertips.

So begins the start of my problem: being able to play every game on every console from the 90s and below sort of back fired on me. Instead of scratching that itch of being able to play any game from any console I chose, it really just made me want to play those games on their original hardware.

So I bought a few retro imitation USB controllers like NES and SNES controllers and plugged them into the arcade. It felt good to play the games more natively, but it still just quite wasn't doing it for me.

The next thing you know, I bought an original NES. And so begins my new stupid expensive hobby.

I am now a proud owner of an original 1985 NES console. It's the front loader version. My initial purchase bought me the console, a controller, and the games Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt (both goddam classics. Since then I've acquired a few more games for it and a NES Zapper. One of the first home light guns released.

The console itself is in very nice condition, almost no yellowing at all (whats yellowing you ask? Basically the reaction of UV light and the bromine  they put in plastics back in the day). It works great too. It's been region unlocked, which was super easy to do for a NES (just clip a pin inside it) so it can play PAL and NTSC games. It's a PAL console itself and I'm hoping I'll get a few years out of it. It has no moving parts inside (no disk drives etc.) but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't paranoid that this 35+ year hardware might just blow at some point.

I paid $190 for it, which is fairly reasonable considering its great condition. They go for alot more on Trademe and sometimes less to but condition etc. varies widely.

The console is pretty basic. Games go in front, you turn it on, any issue hit reset.

The iconic NES controller is probably my favorite though. Its not particularly comfortable after awhile, and my hands are too big for it, but I love the buttons and dpad.

So here's my collection for it so far:

From left to right we have: Castlevania, Defender of the Crown, Wild Gunman, Operation Wolf, RYGA, Super Mario Bros + Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Soccer, and about 190 games in 1 cart.

Castlevania for those who know is a super popular series and a rare game to have, costs me $50 alone. Wild Gunman, Duck Hunt, and Operation Wolf are all light gun games and boy do I love me some light gun games. Duck Hunt has to be my fav next to Wild Gunman. Such classics.

And here's the setup in action. The NES Zapper is so comfy and a such a satisfying gun to use. Wild Gunman is pictured on the TV.

My first impressions when using it were 'I think I've gone too far back'. I thought it would be cool and all to have an NES, but damn this shit is old. All in all I'm happy with my pickup though.

Not everything I'll pick up and be posting in this thread will be considered 'retro'. I would consider the following 'old school' but not 'retro' just yet.

Now that I have the bug for collecting shit I've been checking out second hand stores and auction houses. I scored an original Xbox for $20 in an auction with no cords or anything. Cords are cheap enough and I'm lucky enough to be borrowing a controller for now.

The Xbox works great an only needed a clean up. The day after getting it I looked in a bargain mart and shit you not found Halo 1+2 and a bunch of other great xbox games for like $10. So I've already got some decent games to go with it.

I wanna try collect some decent multiplayer games as the xbox is natively 4 player which is great.

All together on a decent sized CRT TV in my garage <3

I plan to continue to update this thread as I collect more gear. Currently I've got a couple more things to show but I'll do that in my next post.

  PlayStation VR launches this October

PlayStation VR launches this October, priced £349.99/€399.99/$600 NZD
A transformative new gaming experience is nearly upon us

PlayStation Blog Wrote:With the annual Game Developers Conference in full swing, I’m pleased to give you an exciting update on PlayStation VR. Today, we are announcing that PlayStation VR will release in October of this year for a recommended retail price of £349.99/€399.99/AUD$549.95/NZD$629.95.
That is a bit later than the timeframe we previously stated, and I want to thank everyone for their patience and continued support.

PlayStation VR represents a transformative experience in gaming, and we wanted to take the time needed to launch with a broad variety of content and a sufficient supply of hardware. We are beyond excited to deliver to consumers the amazing experience that PS VR offers.

I’m also pleased to reveal the final consumer version of PS VR, including all of the contents that will come in the package.
Today, more than 230 developers are building content for PlayStation VR, from smaller independent teams to larger studios at the industry’s top publishers. We expect to have more than 50 games available from launch in October 2016 until the end of the year. Of course, the full promise of PlayStation VR will continue to grow over time as talented developers create new experiences and new genres that wouldn’t be possible outside of VR. The future looks bright indeed.

Additionally, The Playroom VR, from our very own Japan Studio, will be available as a free download from PlayStation Store for all PS VR owners at launch. The Playroom VR will include six games that can be enjoyed with friends and family, demonstrating why we believe virtual reality can also be an impactful experience when it’s shared.

All those who purchase a PlayStation VR system will receive a PlayStation VR Demo Disc that will feature a number of playable experiences from some of the best games from the launch line-up.
The standalone PlayStation VR headset will be launching in UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Russia and Czech Republic, in October 2016.

PlayStation VR will be available to pre-order soon. For all the details on PS VR and information on how to pre-order head over to playstation.com/psvr. Please note, the PS4 system, Dualshock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation Camera are sold separately.
With PlayStation VR, the future of gaming is almost here. We’re excited to share more with you as we head into launch later this year.

Already up on MightyApe:
https://www.mightyape.co.nz/product/Play...4/25022572

Pretty dam good price considering the market for the other VR headsets. Undercutting the competition by 200+ and they reckon they will still be selling for a profit.

Slight downsides, if you want the full experience you need the PS4 camer ($100 nzd brand new) and 2 move controllers for get your hands in on the action properly ($25-30 ish on trademe etc).

I already nabbed some move controllers for cheap, and trying to get a PS4 camera for cheap too. Hopefully all up ill only be spending $700.

Awesome news though, my bday is in October so now I know what I am getting :D

Can't wait for this!

They Might Be Giants - Phone Power
Posted by: Jargonion - 10-03-2016, 10:15 AM - Forum: Music, Movies, and TV Shows - Replies (18)

So, They Might Be Giants have released a new album.

They've done a Louis C.K.

I know I've talked about them too much (and, in fact, I have a huge post about them coming up), but I really do believe they deserve huge props. These guys are under-sung. In fact, I'm certain that if one of their albums hadn't released on Sep. 11, 2001, that they would be big stars right now.

Anyway, they just released their new album as a digital 'pay what you want' Humble-bundle style download. Unlike HB, though, you can pay nothing if you want. I know you can already pay nothing for 20 years of their music, but please consider listening to the album, then paying a paltry sum to support them.

Oh, neat! My first bot post!

Download it here!

No Man’s Sky release date confirmed: 22nd June 2016

PlayStation Blog Wrote:Pre-orders for retail, limited and digital editions open today

Hi everyone. First off, the big news: we’re very excited to announce that No Man’s Sky launches in Europe on 22nd June 2016 (24th June in the UK). Players will be able to start exploring Hello Games‘ procedurally generated universe and claiming their discoveries from then on.

The second piece of news is that there WILL be a Blu-ray version of No Man’s Sky hitting shops near you. We know some people have guessed at this already, but we’re pleased to be able to officially confirm it.
In the background, Sean Murray has been working with Dave Gibbons (co-creator of Watchmen and Kingsman), James Swallow (Mass Effect, Star Wars, Deus Ex writer) and famous sci-fi book cover artist Angus McKie to create a comic book sharing some of the lore of the game. We all thought it would be cool to include this along with a gorgeous art book from the game, a SteelBook with unique artwork of the Atlas, and a dynamic theme by Mr Div (well-known 3D visual artist and creator of the No Man’s Sky logo) in the Limited Edition we’re also releasing.

Finally, we’re also opening up pre-orders today on both the physical editions and on the digital version. Please check with your local retailer for details on their exclusive pre-order offers.

We hope you’re looking forward to exploring No Man’s Sky as much as we are! Find out more here.

Goddam that leak about the price a couple of days ago was right though. Its a $100 indie game. Although I'd say Indie loosely as Sony hasve poured a lot of money into the development and marketing of this game.

Looks pretty dope though and it's getting a physical edition as well! Really hoping for VR support too, and the lead dev almost confirmed so here:

Although it sounds like it won't be handled by them, or that it will be patched in post launch. Will have to wait.

Anyone with a PS4/PC needs to get this game, its looking like its going to deliver on its bold claims. Good reading here btw:

Risk of Rain is coming to PS4 and PS Vita (still)

Procedural platformer Risk of Rain is coming to PS4 and PS Vita

PlayStation Blog Wrote:Unforgiving PC hit adds PlayStation-exclusive features

While we were developing Risk of Rain, we never expected our game to gain a dedicated following. We were just two college students working out of our dorms in our free time, doing something we loved – making and playing games!

Three years later, Hopoo Games and Code Mystics has partnered up to send Risk of Rain to PlayStation 4 and PS Vita! While PC gamers might be familiar with Risk of Rain, we have a few new features to the game’s online system – exclusive to PS owners.

Thanks to PlayStation Network, we now have automatic matchmaking integrated into Risk of Rain! With just one press of a button you’ll be automatically placed into a lobby with up to three other players around the world – no IP address or port forwarding required, just online fun.

[Image: 25118409391_91ec97c11b_z.jpg] [Image: 24843960359_7788777de9_z.jpg][Image: 25118409691_1a585a0e91_z.jpg]

But what would Risk of Rain be without playing with friends? Now you can play on the couch, and on the internet – all at once! While we still have the four-player local co-op available in Risk of Rain, you can now play online lobbies while sharing a machine with your friend – up to two per machine. Wanna just play online instead? You can also invite your friends into your lobby through the PlayStation Network’s “Invite” feature to get all your game buddies into one lobby.

“But Duncan, what if my friend is on PS Vita and I’m on PS4?” No worries – we know that people prefer playing on their own platform, so now we also have cross-platform online support between PS Vita and PS4. That means that both a player sitting on the couch on their PS4 and a player on the bus playing on their PS Vita can both enjoy Risk of Rain chaos – together.

[Image: 24580978034_3ed2f7cd81_z.jpg] [Image: 25185335566_2f627170be_z.jpg][Image: 24916016890_d79c2daf25_z.jpg]

These changes are all aimed at letting Risk of Rain do what it’s best at – fun, but brutally hard time with friends. With automatic matchmaking, local-coop integration with online lobbies, and cross-platform support, we’re hoping that the online experience is the best possible for players. And for all our new Sony fans – thank you so much for your support, and prepare to die. A lot.

See you on the planet.

So it's nice to know it's still coming out for PS4/Vita. They only annlocued it over a year ago. Still no info on a release date or whether it will be cross buy though.

Awesome to see they sorted out the multiplayer though. No port forwarding connect to IP crap. Now its all over the PSN with match making and such, plus cross play between PS4/Vita.

No give us a release date!

What sort of gamer are you?
Posted by: crispier taco - 22-02-2016, 06:52 PM - Forum: Video Game Discussion - Replies (24)

So back in the old days Richard Bartle theorised that when playing a multiplayer game online, there are 4 forms of motivation.

These are:
Achievement: Fulfilling the explicit requirements of game quests/trophies/goals
Exploration:   Learning more about the game/understanding it's mechanics/seeking out hidden features
Killing:           Competing with and defeating other human players in the game. Also griefing I think.
Social:           Using the game as a platform for social interactions and just having a great time with others.

This concept was drawn from observing dungeon crawlery and that sort of thing, so it isn't necessarily relevant to all types of multiplayer game.
I think most people realise what sort of gamer they are without a flawed internet quiz, but here you are:

Show Contentflawed quiz:

It's sort of an interesting idea, and you can see in many games they've got features that explicitly reach out to these perceived audiences, such as lists of "achievements", separate PvP areas for otherwise non-PvP games, options to make your character dance, and with every year and increasing volume of almost-hilarious easter eggs in nearly-cleverly concealed spots.

In games I quite enjoy, I think I find myself mostly exploring and some socialising. If I find myself just following quest requirements, normally that's a sign that I'm not truly enjoying the game's environment, and just waiting for it to get better or be over.  What about yous, forum friends?

  Indiebox - Nuclear Throne unboxing
Posted by: AdminGG - 12-02-2016, 10:40 AM - Forum: Video Game Discussion - Replies (7)

So I recently discovered this site called Indiebox https://www.theindiebox.com/ after Rami, the creator of Nuclear Throne was tweeting about it. Basically they work with indie game devs to make physical boxed editions of their games. It's a monthly subscription service like Loot Crate.

Usually im not into that sort of thing, but I couldn't miss the chance to have my own copy of boxed Nuclear Throne. To top it off, Nuclear Throne was going to be a limited print and they would not be making more to sell through their site.

Nuclear Throne is a dope as game and is basically a top-down, bullet hell rouge-like. Everyone should give it a go.

So I signed up for a 1 month plan (https://www.theindiebox.com/sign-up/one/) $25 USD so about 35 NZD + shipping. Total being 45ish from memory. A little pricey, but hey currency conversions and shipping. They shipped towards the end of January and my copy finally arrived yesterday!

So I present to you, Januarys Indiebox: Nuclear Throne.

Right off the bat, I love the packaging:

It comes in a clear plastic sleeve that contains the box:

The box in all its glory:

The box design is cleverly designed after a mimic ammo chest, which appear in the game. Very appropriate.

Back of the box:

No. 3473 is mine!

So lets take a look inside shall we?

First thing I dug out of the box was a plush maggot version of the maggot enemies in the game:

Very soft and cuddly I suppose?

At closer inspection I can see its a pouch of sorts:

So idk I could put my balls in it or something. It's novelty, but cute I suppose.

NEXT

FUCK YEAH MINI FIGURES

AWESOME. I came with 3 mini figures of the first  bosses in the game. Left to right: Big Bandit, Big Dog, Lil Hunter.

They are pretty good quality, and fairly well painted given their size. They shall sit on my desk!

Next I dug out this!

It's the character Chicken from the game. One of Tofus favorites. I thought it was a magnet or something until I played with it some more:

Oh fuck yeah its a USB. Not only that an awesomely designed USB. Chickens ability is 'hard to kill' when you hit 0 HP she loses her head and runs around like as a headless chicken. So this USB is awesomely designed.

In my laptop:

It had 3 DRM free copies of Nuclear Throne for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Very cool.

Next up, Stickers!

Not big on stickers myself, but I love the one of all the characters in the car. Think ill stick that in my arcade somewhere. We also got no popo stickers and an Indiebox one features Y.V.

Digging deeper in the box I found this:

An official sound track! Score. The music to Nuclear Throne is dope.

Inside the box was also a printed manual for the game. Which is super cool as when do you ever see a game manual these days?

Pretty detailed too

Next up is a copy of Nulcear Throne for PS4/Vita

That makes a total of 5 copies of the game: Steam, PS4/Vita, DRM free copies for all OS's. That alone is worth the price of the box so far.

And final pick off all the loot:

Pretty happy with this to be honest. Love the mini figures, USB, and sound track. And the box it all came in is super cool. It was worth the price in the end considering all the copies of the game I got.

For anyone interested though, I already own Nuclear Throne on PS4/Vita and Steam. So that means I have a free Steam code and PlayStation store code. Only thing with the PlayStation code is its for US accounts only. Easy to work around on PS4 though as you can create a US account then download the game and then just play it on your primary account.

So if you want a copy, hit me up!

Overwatch Beta wave 2 just started. All new emotes and skins, with a crate system like Valve's except no paying for keys.

I'm hyped.

Only thing I'm concerned about is the 20 tick rate, but people have been playing and having no troubles so??
