the Gospel According to Mark

Disclaimer: Not a Christian, nor doing this to tease Christians. Virtually all research done through wikipedia

Just for my own interest, I'm going to read a book out of the bible. We're going to use the King James Version, and stop at Mark 16:8, because apparently the bible archaeologists reckon the remainder of Mark 16 was written by later theologians.

According to the two-source hypothesis, Mark and a lost "Q source" were sourced for the writing of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, with Mark being the most consistent among them. Apparently John is a whole other deal.


Mark was written in Greek, for Greek-speaking Christians. Before the written culture of the bible, Christians would have spread their religion orally, and I imagine the understanding of Jesus matured differently in each community.

Mark 1
so there are 16 books, and each book is broken up into lines? phrases? sentences? something like that. let's get started

and here we have John the Baptist, an ascetic holy man. He predicts that someone will outshine his holiness but he seems alright about it.

So God legitimises John the Baptist's claim, but then Jesus is driven into the wilderness. Satan and dick with Jesus for 40 days, but he has the angels and the wild beasts as like a support group. John ends up in jail. Jesus' sentence in forest jail finishes and he goes to Galilee.
I'm not sure if by "believe the gospel" Mark is saying that Jesus is endorsing the gospel of Mark before it was written, or endorsing the "good news"(a literal translation of the Greek word gospel) of himself before spreading it.

Jesus casually recruits four fishermen. The "fishers of men" concept seems to me as ominous as "shepherd of man", in that you're treating humans as edible animals. But those seems to be the compelling metaphors of the day.

So when Jesus and his 4 fisherman friends (I believe they are the first of the disciples?) reach Capernaum and people are impressed by Jesus not relying of scripture like the scribes in the synagogue, which seems pretty ironic seeing that modern christianity is so reliant on scripture. He then performs exorcisms and healing miracles for the whole town.

He also prevented the devils he exorcised to identify him as the son of god. I'm not sure why though, he's already achieving local fame and a following, at this stage his magic benevolence is clear regardless of his relationship with God.

Here Simon has joined Jesus' party, and they travel the local region, performing more exorcisms. Jesus then cures a leper, and tells him to be quiet about it, but instead becomes his best PR worker and makes him even more famous.

So that's Mark1! Jesus is foretold by John, then after a month and a half in forest jail becomes a healer and exorcist in Galilee, gains 5 disciples, and becomes famous.

Mark 2

[7] Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?

Here Jesus and his entourage return to Capernaum, where last episode they cured Simon's mum. Here he has forgives the sins of a man with palsy (a form of paralysis). Some "scribes" take note of this, because only god has that power (and confession is presumably not a practice in Judaism).

Here, we learn that Jesus is either intuitive or psychic (either is fine). In response to the concerns of the scribes, he uses this logic: Just like a man can forgive sins, so too can be cure palsy. He then proceeds to do just that.
I'm quite sure what the deal is, is Jesus saying that any man is capable of channeling a miracle? Jesus does explicitly say "the Son of man hath power".

[16] And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
[17] When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Here the scribes and the Pharisees (a group within Judaism distinguished by strict adherence to tradition) question why Jesus is hanging out with sinners. His analogy describes him as a physician for the soul, which is fair seeing as he can forgive sins. Morally upright people probably need less sins forgiven. Publicans are apparently also bad guys, but it seems like they are just Roman civil servants.

[21] No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.
[22] And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.

The scribes and Pharisees then ask why Jesus is not fasting, as is appropriate in this context. Jesus responds that this is his proverbial wedding and it would be rude not to feed everybody. He then says "when the bridegroom shall be taken away[...] they shall fast" which just sounds bizarre. Can you only eat when you're celebrating a miracle? He then goes on to criticise clothes repair and recycling.

Let's just first recognise that it's probably okay for Jesus to eat corn that's not his; he did after all cure a bunch of people all over the region. The Pharisees question Jesus about breaking the rules of the sabbath. He responds first by telling how the Judaic hero David also broke the rules when he had need to, and then said that because the sabbath is was made for man, man should do what he wants during the sabbath. God created the sabbath not for us to devote ourselves to him but so we could rest and eat and be merry. Cool, I'm all for that.

Both the suggestion that men have the power to perform miracles and forgive sin, and that the sabbath is day off rather than a day of religious asceticism give Mark2 pro people vibes.

The authorship of the Gospel of Mark is uncertain. Bible archaeologists reckon that it was written during Nero's time when he was dicking with the Christians, or during a Jewish revolt, so 66-70 CE.

I think "Mark", whoever he was, was a Greek speaking Christian and was documenting the Christian oral history. I think it's hard to say where the stories came from, but if you believe that Jesus actually did have magic powers, then his actual following (the 12 disciples and all the people who saw him doing miracles) reported his story which condensed into a religion.

An abuse of celebrity to be sure. If he and his following ruined the farmers crops (trampling as well as eating) the poor man might starve.

I'm not sure if it happens in Mark, but at some point Jesus duplicated fish and bread, so hopefully he pulled off similar shenanigans over here.

Mark 3

So Jesus turns up again at the synagogue, and heals a guy even though it's the sabbath. I guess you're not supposed to do anything on the sabbath, except mutter and disapprove of things. The Herodians are a group of Hellenistic (Greek-cultured) Jews, and like the Pharisees, aren't pleased with Jesus being such a loose cannon.

So Jesus gets out of the synagogue and a crowd gathers about him from all over, even from neighbouring regions. He gets in a small boat to avoid them, and that was good because many were sick and gross. He tells his disciples not to reveal his identity, which I can respect.

Here Jesus forms his own Avengers team, and it seems like he's giving them all the same powers he has. Back in book2 Jesus said, "The Son of Man hath power", so maybe that was a prelude to this. Also note the callous spoiler, but this was thought to have been written for Christians who were already down with the verbal history.

Here the scribes find Jesus and claim he's an agent of the Devil. Jesus counters this by saying that the forces of Satan would not fight among themselves. However, the existence of Satan was a result of a member of the house of god turning against the status quo, and civil wars and such seem regular enough. Further, even before Jesus, Judaism is built of multiple cliques (The Pharisees and Herodians, although allied now, are separate factions, and the Samaritans are another separate but similar pre-Jesus Abrahamic faith/culture. I think Jesus uses poor reasoning here.

This parable apparently refers to the local common wisdom that "no one robs a strong man's house", and suggesting Satan is the strong man, and Jesus is tying up Satan in order to steal his things (expel devils). Once again, one who casts out devils who do not serve him is not proof of goodness, these devils may not recognise Satan. If you can reject God, you might also reject Satan.

Jesus here offers forgiveness to all... except heretics, who he says are at risk of eternal damnation. This is a bold move, seeing his movement might then be considered a heresy of contemporary Judaism.

Here I think Jesus is saying: Anyone who follows God I will regard as part of my family. Which is sweet, but kind of a snub to say that with his actual family right there. But, eh.

This parable is delivered to a mass of people, and afterwards Jesus realises that not even his disciples understood it. He then expands on it in detail, and then fortifies it with reference to the correct placement of a candlestick.

His overall message is that for the word of God to be valuable, one must pay attention and interpret the words. No one understands his parables, and Jesus says in 4:11 that everybody (bar the disciples) may only receive the word of God in the form of parables.

This just suggests that we're all fucked.

Here the kingdom of God is described as a mustard seed, small as a seed, but despite small beginnings, it turns into a big tree. The wikipedia page suggests this is Jesus planting the seed of Christendom, which has long now been a world power. Some scholars suggest that the local mustard variety was known both as a plant of medicinal value and a voracious and smothering weed, which is a neat interpretation from my cynical perspective.

Here Jesus and his disciples decide to cross what I suppose is the Dead Sea, or that lake north of it. There is a storm and the disciples freak out, only for Jesus to pull some Moses-tier miracle and calms the storm. Everyone remains freaked out.

[9] And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.

Here Jesus and his posse have arrived at "the country of the Gadarenes" according to wikipedia, this could refer to any of three settlements that were culturally more Greco-Roman (and gentile) than Semitic. There is a man that Jesus encounters who spent his days cutting his wrists in graveyards.

Sounds like the earliest account of a goth, except also a total badass, able to rip asunder any chain.  The hulk-goth asks Jesus to leave him be, and tell Jesus his name "is Legion: for we are many", from which we can interpret that possession here is endemic. I also notice (although I'm not sure if it's relevant) that a Legion is a Roman military concept, and this area has greater Roman cultural influence than the previous locations that Jesus has visited.

[12] And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
[13] And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
[14] And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.
[15] And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
[16] And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine.
[17] And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.

Here, I think, Jesus gives the devils permission to leave the humans and enter a herd of two thousand pigs. He then drives all the pigs into the sea and drowns them. The swineherds then reported this to the city (fair enough). I think the people from the city then see the once-possessed-now-okay hulk-goth. The city people then are afraid of Jesus.

Mark5:18-21 Wrote:[18] And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.
[19] Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
[20] And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.
[21] And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.

Here the hulk-goth asks to pray with Jesus. Jesus instead tells him to go home and tell all his friends about Jesus and how great God is.

[23] And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.

[25] And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
[26] And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
[27] When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
[28] For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
[29] And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.
[30] And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
[31] And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
[32] And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
[33] But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
[34] And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

Here a leader from the synagogue, named Jairus, asks Jesus to heal his daughter, who is dying. On the way a woman touches Jesus' garment and is immediately healed of a disease of perpetual bleeding. According to Jewish law, a woman is regarded unclean during menstruation, and so this woman, who was perhaps bleeding for 12 years, would've been regarded always unclean. Jesus is aware that his healing power is being tapped into, and asks who did it. She confesses to siphoning his mana, and he's cool about it.

[36] As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
[37] And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
[38] And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.
[39] And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
[40] And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
[41] And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
[42] And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
[43] And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.

Now Jairus finds out his daughter has since died, but Jesus is all "she's not dead, just sleeping", visits their house and says "Talitha, wake up", and she does. But she is hungry.

He then tells Jairus and his wife to keep it a secret that their daughter has come back from the dead, which sounds quite tricky, seeing as a huge crowd just heard it said that she was dead. It's also strange that Jesus wanted the hulk-goth to spread word of his miracles, and the next city over he wants his miracles kept a secret. Not sure what the motivation is.
